Definition – What does Integrated Amrita Meditation (IAM) mean?

Integrated Amrita Meditation (IAM) is the name of a trademarked technique that combines different meditation methods, relaxing yoga stretches and breathing exercises. Amrita is the Sanskrit word for “immortality” and, in Indian philosophy, refers to the nectar that bestowed immortality to the gods.

This meditation technique was created by spiritual leader, Sri Mata Amritanandamayi, who was recognized by the United Nations for her humanitarian work. IAM Technique is a division of Amrita Charities, which is based in Kerala, India. The practice is licensed and taught all over the world.

Integrated Amrita Meditation Technique is not tied to any particular spiritual or religious tradition and is, therefore, suitable for yogis of all faiths. One version of the technique, called IAM-20, offers a quicker path to a state of calmness and peace, taking just 20 minutes while combining the yoga postures, breathing and concentration exercises with the meditation.

A scientific study of the IAM Technique concluded that it was effective in reducing levels of the stress hormones, adrenaline and cortisol, in the study’s participants. Practicing the IAM Technique is also reported to offer the following benefits:
